New HTG Citizen Brainful Sends Us This. Brainful. Almost Sounds Like One of Those Bran Cereals That’s Supposed To Be Good For You. Brainful With Almonds. Just Part of a Balanced Breakfast.

Gerhard Berger was one of the top Formula 1 drivers in late 80s and early 90s. The Austrian has achieved 10 Grand Prix victories in 210 races, but he was never a championship contender. And that’s because most of his career he was outshined by his teammates. Without a doubt it’s hard to be a partner of the great Ayrton Senna. Did that ruined their relationship? No. “Ayrton and I, we were, and we still are, best friends” he said in 1993 when he left Mclaren team to join Ferrari.

We find Berger in the paddock, just before the first F1 race in Singapore. We see about a 50-year-old man, a little bald and with a bay window, but always smiling. Nowadays he’s owner of Scuderia Toro Rosso. The reason we are looking for him is the recent rumor that he has paid some part of the new racing film “Petrol in the Veins”, about the life of his friend Ayrton Senna. He agreed to a small interview.

“Yes, I donated a little” he said. “But Ayrton deserves it. It’s just amazing that there are still millions of fans more than 14 years after his death. And these are people who don’t know him outside the car. And to be honest, Ayrton was great as a driver, but he was twice as great as a man and friend.”

It is said Berger helped producers with telling them some secrets about Senna that we’ll see in the film. “Yeah, I told them some happenings we had with Ayrton. He taught me a thing or two about driving; I showed him how to amuse. But you can’t teach a Brazilian how to dance, it’s like teaching them play football…” a tear drops from the eye of the Austrian. “We had some great moments, I still remember the last moment I saw him. It was just before the race in Imola, the commentators were announcing drivers and I was driving for Ferrari. When they announced my name the Italians were jumping and shouting. I was just in front of his car and he looked to me and he was laughing and so… You really could see we were friends, it was an honest laugh, he was even happy if something went well for me.”

At this moment we try to change a little bit the topic and ask him about the film. “I think it’s really good idea to make a film about Ayrton. I saw the script and I think it would be a great movie. There isn’t anything about Senna that is not perfect, so I hope this film will be, too.”

We hope so, too.

Petrol in the Veins has been picked up by Ship of Fooles Studio.
